Common questions

Where are my journal entries kept?

On your device, and nowhere else. They are never uploaded. See the privacy policy.

I deleted the app and lost my journal. Can you get it back?

No, and neither can anyone else. Entries live only on the device, so removing the app removes them. If you had a device backup from before, restoring that backup will bring them back.

Why is the breathing screen's text so faint?

That's deliberate. Panic attacks often happen in public, and the screen is designed to be readable by the person holding the phone without being legible to anyone nearby. If it's too faint for you in normal use, tell me — it's a judgement call and I'd like to know how it lands.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes, entirely. The app has no networking at all. The only things needing a connection are the two outbound links on the Crisis Resources screen.

Are the techniques medically approved?

They are adapted from published guidance by NAMI, the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, and Mayo Clinic, and each screen names its source. Averted is a self-help tool, not a medical device, and does not diagnose or treat anything. It is not a substitute for care from a qualified professional.

Can I use it on iPad?

Yes. Averted runs on iPhone and iPad, and needs iOS 18 or later.

Reporting a bug

Helpful things to include: which device, which iOS version, what you did, and what happened instead. A screenshot is worth a lot. If the app crashed, leaving Apple's crash sharing turned on means I'll likely see it anyway.
